Sevier School District

Student/Parent Chromebook/iPad Agreement

Philosophy

Sevier School District (SSD) seeks to continually improve teaching and learning. We believe that the key to quality instruction is the teacher. Technology is an accelerator when partnered with a maintained focus on school culture and pedagogy. If we maintain a focus on all three areas (culture, pedagogy, and technology) we will provide our students with the kind of education that they deserve and expect. SSD will issue Chromebooks/iPads to each student in grades 6–12 on a loan basis, subject to the conditions enumerated below.

The Chromebooks/iPads will come with a power adaptor and charging cable. Teachers can have the students use the Chromebooks/iPads in the classroom and assign homework on them. Students can learn, explore, and turn assignments in through the Chromebooks/iPads. This Chromebook/iPad Program also presents an opportunity to learn to live with, control, and use technology appropriately and wisely.

This document outlines the procedures and expectations that are in place for the Sevier School District (SSD) Student/Parent Chromebook/iPad Program. Terms of this agreement are subject to change without notice.

Definition: Parent means Parent/Guardian throughout this policy.

Student/Parent Chromebook/iPad Agreement and Acceptable Use Policy must be signed in order for a Chromebook/iPad to be issued to a student.

Deployment

A. Parent will be informed by letter and/or automated messaging system of location, date, and time of orientation meetings. The program and Student/Parent Chromebook/iPad Agreement will be explained. The parent and student must sign the agreement in order for the student to be issued a Chromebook/iPad.

B. Prior to students being issued a Chromebook/iPad:
1. Parent/guardian must attend an orientation training. (Mandatory)
2. All students must attend orientation training. (Mandatory)
3. Parent/guardian and student must sign the Student/Parent Chromebook/iPad Agreement.

Terms of Chromebook/iPad Loan

A. Terms of Loan
1. Sevier School District will issue a Chromebook/iPad to each student (6-12) upon compliance with the following:
a. Student Orientation Training Session
b. Parent/Guardian Orientation Meeting
i. A signed Acceptable Use Policy
ii. A signed Student/Parent Chromebook/iPad Agreement.
c. Legal title to the property (Chromebook/iPad) is with SSD. A student’s right of possession and use is limited to, and conditioned upon, full and complete compliance with this Student/Parent Chromebook/iPad Policy Agreement and SSD’s Acceptable Use Policy.
d. Students should NEVER attempt to repair, change or reconfigure a Chromebook/iPad. Under no circumstances are they to attempt to open or tamper with the internal components of the Chromebook/iPad. Doing so will render the warranty void and will result in disciplinary action. If it becomes necessary for the administration to reconfigure a Chromebook/iPad, the parent/guardian will be charged a $15 fee.
e. Students may be subject to loss of privilege, disciplinary action, and/or legal action in the event of intentional damage and/or violation of District policies and agreements.
f. Students should not remove or add any management or authentication software. SSD will use management software to install applications on Chromebooks. Students should make sure those applications remain on the Chromebooks at all times.
g. Students should not download or install software on the SSD issued Chromebooks/iPads.
h. A student’s possession of the Chromebook/iPad terminates on the last day of the school each year unless it is terminated sooner. Students must return the Chromebooks/iPads in good condition at the end of the school year. Chromebooks/iPads will not be available for use during the summer months.
B. Lost, Damaged, or Stolen Chromebooks/iPads
1. The parent/guardian shall immediately report the loss or theft of a SSD Chromebook/iPad which occurs off campus to the police and provide a copy of the police report to the District/school.
2. The student shall immediately report the loss or theft of a SSD Chromebook/iPad which occurs at school to the School administration.
3. The parent/guardian shall be responsible to pay the School District for any damage caused by blatant and obvious negligence of a SSD Chromebook/iPad.

Repossession

SSD may repossess a Chromebook/iPad at any time at the administration’s sole discretion for any violation of this agreement or District policies.

Modification to the Chromebook Program

The District reserves the right to revoke or modify the Chromebook/iPad Program or its terms at any time.

Expectation of Privacy for Student Chromebooks/iPads

A. The Chromebooks/iPads are the property of Sevier School District and therefore are not subject to the same privacy expectation as private property. There is not an expectation of privacy while using SSD Chromebooks/iPads.

B. SSD has the right to manage and monitor the Chromebooks/iPads in the following ways:

1. Teachers and administrators may remotely access, view, and control student Chromebooks/iPads.
2. Teachers and administrators may search the Chromebook/iPad for inappropriate use or materials at any time.
3. Technology staff will monitor all network traffic to troubleshoot network issues.
4. SSD requires all Internet traffic to pass through the iBoss content filter. This filter will log all attempts to access inappropriate material at all times. Violations will result in disciplinary action. District Policy will be followed.

General Care of the Chromebook/iPad

A. Students are responsible for the Chromebook/iPad they receive. Damaged Chromebooks/iPads in need of repair must be returned to the student’s advisor.
B. Guidelines to follow:

1. Students should never leave a Chromebook/iPad unattended.
2. Students should never allow someone else to use their assigned Chromebook/iPad or give someone else their passwords other than parents or school technology staff.

4. Liquids, food, and other debris can damage the Chromebook/iPad. Students should avoid eating or drinking while using the Chromebook/iPad. Students should NOT keep food or food wrappers on the Chromebook/iPad.
5. Students should take extreme caution with the screen. The screens are very susceptible to damage from excessive pressure or weight.
6. Dimming the LCD brightness on a student’s screen will extend the battery run time. For help consult student’s teacher or school site specialist.
7. Under no circumstances should a student attempt to open or tamper with the internal components of the Chromebook/iPad, nor should they pry it apart.
8. Students should take care when inserting cords to avoid damage to their Chromebook/iPad ports.
9. Students should not expose the Chromebook/iPad to extreme temperatures, direct sunlight or ultraviolet light for extended periods of time. Extreme heat or cold may cause damage to the Chromebook/iPad.
10. No decorations are to be placed directly on the Chromebook/iPad itself.

C. Cleaning the Chromebook/iPad

1. Students are encouraged to perform simple cleaning procedures as outlined below:
a. Students should always disconnect the Chromebook/iPad from any power outlet before cleaning.
b. Students should never use liquids on the Chromebook/iPad screen or keyboard.
c. Students should clean the screen with a soft, lightly dampened, lint-free cloth or use anti-static screen cleaners or wipes.

General Security

A. Students should never leave the Chromebook/iPad unattended or unsecured. Chromebooks/iPads should be secured in a designated storage area or a secured locker.
B. During after-school activities students are still expected to maintain the security of the Chromebook/iPad.
C. Staff will confiscate unsupervised Chromebooks/iPads and disciplinary actions may be taken.

1. Each Chromebook/iPad has an identifying label (i.e. SSD asset number, serial number). Under no circumstances are students to modify or destroy those labels or markings.

General Use of the Chromebook

A. Students are REQUIRED to bring their Chromebook/iPad to school each day with a FULLY CHARGED battery. Students will NOT be given the use of a loaner Chromebook/iPad if they leave the device at home. Students leaving Chromebooks/iPads at home will be required to complete the assignments using alternate means (as determined by the teacher). Students who have a Chromebook/iPad in for repair will be given a loaner.
1. Students may receive disciplinary referral from their teacher for repeatedly refusing to bring the Chromebook/iPad to class.
2. Students should avoid using their Chromebook/iPad in areas which may lead to damage or theft. Students should not use their Chromebook/iPad around sporting activities, during events, or in the cafeteria area when food is being served/consumed.
3. Students should mute Chromebooks/iPads or use earphones at all times, including at school and on buses, unless permission is obtained from teacher and/or driver.
4. Deletion of some management apps could result in a Chromebook/iPad failure and will interfere with the ability to complete class work.
5. Students are prohibited from playing games on the Chromebook/iPad during class unless directed by the teacher.
6. The use of the Internet at school is a privilege, not a right. Inappropriate use may result in suspension/termination of use privileges.
7. Parental monitoring of Chromebook/iPad use is highly recommended.
8. Students will provide access to any Chromebook/iPad, and/or accessories that they have been assigned upon the District or school’s request.
9. Students who violate the Computer and Internet Acceptable Use Policy may lose access to the Chromebook/iPad after hours and have limited access during school hours.
10. Students caught stealing or damaging another student’s Chromebook/iPad will be responsible for replacement or repairs. They will be referred to local law enforcement for prosecution.
11. Cameras must only be used with good judgment.
12. Any use of the Chromebook/iPad or technology for demeaning, intimidating, harassing or bullying of students or staff is strictly prohibited and will result in immediate disciplinary action.
13. Any sharing of inappropriate material produced on a school device or on any device on school property is prohibited.
14. Under no circumstances should students share their passwords, except with parents and school technology staff.

A. SSD manages and monitors student e-mail accounts.
B. Students should always use appropriate language.
C. Students should not transmit language/material that is profane, obscene, abusive, or offensive to others.
D. Students should maintain high integrity with regard to email content.
E. No private chatting.
F. SSD e-mail is subject to inspection by school and district staff and administration. There is no expectation of privacy for Chromebook/iPad use.

Internet Access/Filtering

A. As required by the Children’s Internet Protection Act, a current filtering solution (iBoss) is maintained by the District for school use on the Chromebook/iPad. This is a “good faith” effort to block inappropriate content, but the District cannot guarantee that access to all inappropriate sites will be blocked. It is the responsibility of the user and parent/guardian to follow guidelines for appropriate use of the network and the Internet. SSD will not be responsible for any problems suffered while on the network or the Internet. Use of any information obtained through the Internet is at the user’s own risk.
B. In order to access the Internet away from campus:
1. Students must have access to an Internet service provider.
2. If students have access to an existing wireless access point, the Chromebook/iPad can join the wireless network.
3. SSD staff cannot provide direct assistance in connecting a student’s Chromebook/iPad to any non-SSD network.

Copyright

Compliance with federal copyright law is expected of everyone. “Copyright” is legal protection for creative intellectual works, which is broadly interpreted to cover just about any expression of an idea. Text (including email and Web information), graphics, art, photographs, music and software are examples of types of works protected by copyright. Copying, distributing, downloading, and uploading information on the Internet may infringe the copyright for that information. Even an innocent, unintentional infringement violates law.

Screensavers/Background Images

A. Inappropriate content may not be used as a wallpaper/background.
B. Presence of inappropriate language or images of guns, weapons, pornography, alcohol, drugs, or gang-related symbols on the Chromebook/iPad is prohibited and will result in disciplinary action.

Deleting files

Students should not delete any files that they did not create. Deletion of certain files can affect the Chromebook’s/iPad’s performance.

Personal Devices

Possible consequence for violations of this policy may include but are not limited the following:
A. Confiscation of device for a time to be determined by administration,
B. Loss of internet privileges,
C. Possible fines,
D. In-school and out of school suspensions, and/or
E. Referral to Juvenile Court.

Acceptable Use policy consequences shall be enforced. The administration reserves the right to impose any additional consequences as necessary and appropriate.
