 About Ashman Elementary

Ashman Elementary (grades K-2) has a proven track record of producing high academic student achievement. It has been named a high-performing Title One School, has received North West Evaluation Association’s Growth Achievement Award in 2009, and during the 2009-2011 school years was one of 5 elementary schools chosen to pilot a teacher performance pay model for the State of Utah. The school serves a student population of approximately 500 students, and employs 21 full-time teachers and 20 part-time support staff. The school was built in 1951 and was significantly restructured in 2011. It is named after the district’s first Superintendent, A.J. Ashman.

School Mission Statement

Our mission is supporting parents--the child’s first, and most important teachers—in providing their children a safe and caring school experience as well as high quality educational opportunities that result in solid academic student growth and achievement.

Belief Statements:

We believe our nation is founded on the premise that no free people can govern or sustain itself if it is not first and foremost a good people and secondly, a thinking people.

We believe in the potential greatness of every child.
We believe we must prepare and influence each child to face the unpredictable opportunities and challenges of his/her future lives.
We believe in helping children seek truth wherever it may be found.
We believe in helping children learn kindness, courage, responsibility, self-discipline, perseverance, independence, and happiness.
We believe we must help children build knowledge and expertise in both learning how to learn as well as learning what to learn in subjects such as science and math & in skills such as reading, listening, speaking, and writing.

School Goals 2011-2012:

1) Ensure a safe and caring campus environment. We will be enhancing our emergency preparedness plan with the help of parents.
2) Improve teacher / parent communications & relations. We want parents in our classrooms to see first-hand the amazingly wonderful things that are really going on.
3) Build students’ background knowledge through increased exposure to informational text (not just stories), vocabulary building, and rigorous writing practice.
4) Continue to build a professional learning community among teachers as we study together: first, the highly effective instructional practices outlined in Robert Marzano’s research; second, effective writing instruction; and third, the excellent digital and technological resources available to us.
