Parents,

At the beginning of each school year, we elect two new parent members to our community council. A notice of election is sent home in the communicators with a place for you to sign if you’d like to be a candidate. Elections are held each year in September. We invite you to watch for the notice each year and sign up as a candidate if you have time to serve. Here’s some information about the requirements to be a candidate and what the community council is:

Candidates must:
Be willing to serve a two-year term
Have a child at Monroe Elementary for at least one of the two years
Not work for Monroe Elementary more than six hours per week on average

What is a Community Council?
The School LAND Trust Program, established by the legislature in 1999, distributes the "annual dividend" from

the permanent State School Fund through school districts to all public schools in the state. Elected parents, elected teachers, and the principal serve on the School Community Councils, with the majority being parents. School Community Councils in each school prepare a plan to address their greatest academic need with the dividend. Local School Boards approve the plans, and funding is sent to each school with an approved plan before the school year begins.

If you don’t feel you have time to be a council member, we still encourage you to get involved by attending our Community Council Meetings. Our meetings are scheduled on our school calendar, and the agendas are posted on our website at least one week before each meeting. We hope you’ll take the opportunity to get involved and see the great things happening here at Monroe Elementary.

Thank you,

Chett Heath
