As a participating district in the Govenor's Blue Ribon Assessment Pilot, Sevier School District administers universal college preparation/admission testing in grades 8, 10, and 11. ACT's EPAS® Educational Planning and Assessment System provides a longitudinal, systematic approach to educational and career planning, assessment, instructional support, and evaluation. EPAS assesses student achievement at three key transition points so that academic progress can be monitored to ensure that each student is prepared to reach his/her post-high school goals. The EPAS assessments are administered as follows:
- EXPLORE: 8th grade—In the Fall of each school year
- PLAN: 10th grade—In the Fall of each school year
- ACT: 11th grade—In the Spring of each school year
Each of the above assessments contain four curriculum-based tests that measure academic achievement in the areas of English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science. These curriculum-based tests cover the skills and knowledge that are commonly taught in the nation's schools and are judged to be important for success in both high school and college. The tests measure what students know and what they are able to do with their knowledge.
ACT's EPAS assessments measure student performance in the context of college readiness. College Readiness Benchmark Scores have been established for each assessment. Students who meet or exceed these benchmarks have approximately a 50 percent chance of earning a B or better and approximately a 75 percent chance of earning a C or better in the corresponding college course or courses when they finish high school.
The content of the EXPLORE tests is closely tied to that of the achievement tests in the ACT, which is broadly used for college entrance and placement decisions. Also, it is consistent with the content of ACT's PLAN® program for grade 10. EXPLORE, PLAN and the ACT are used in combination to focus on meeting academic standards across the entire secondary school core program of studies. The EPAS College Readiness Standards are a useful tool for supporting instructional improvement.
ACT encourages a focus on trends (3, 5, 10 years), not year-to-year changes. The following Sevier District EPAS Trend reports reveal the percentage of students meeting or exceeding college readiness benchmarks for the past three years. The report also shows district goals which have been established for the 2011-2012 school year.
