1.      Staff or students who are aware of a weapon brought to school should immediately notify the principal or teacher.

2.      Tell principal or teacher name of individual suspected of bringing the weapon, where the weapon is located, if the suspect has threatened anyone and any other details that may prevent the suspect from hurting someone or themselves. 

3.      If a teacher suspects the weapon is in the classroom, a neighboring teacher should be confidentially notified.  The teacher should not leave the classroom.

      The principal should;

1.      Call the school resource officer or sheriff/police if a weapon is suspected to be in school, as viewed by a reasonable person.

2.      Ask another administrator or the school resource officer to join you in asking the person to accompany you to a private office.  Wait for police.

3.      A search of the person, his/her locker, desk and belongings should be conducted with law enforcement personnel.

4.      Law enforcement will inform person of his or her rights and why the search was conducted.

5.      Keep detailed notes of all events and why the search was conducted.

6.      If the suspect is a student, notify parent(s) or guardian(s).  Explain why the search was conducted and the results of the search.

7.      If the suspect threatens you with a weapon, do not attempt to disarm him/her.  Back away with your arms up and try to remain clam.
