SUICIDE THREAT
1. Verify information, call 911 if danger to person is imminent. Principal is notified.
2. Escort student to the counseling office to see a counselor. Counselor should call for consultation and support for student as needed.
3. If counselor assesses risk of suicide is possible, then a plan to keep the student safe should be formulated, parents should be immediately contacted and asked to meet with the counselor and pick the student up. Counselor should discuss with parent, student's need for outside referral to seek emergency help. Do not release the student to any one but the parent or guardian no matter how long it takes to get that person on campus.
4. In extreme emergencies if a student is to be transported to a medical facility for psychiatric evaluation and the parents are unavailable to accompany, then one of the school mental health professionals should accompany the student to the hospital.
5. THE STUDENT SHOULD NOT BE LEFT ALONE, is kept under careful watch in a secure place and does not have any available means to attempt suicide.
6. Formulate a re-entry plan with the student, parent and appropriate staff address the needs of the student upon their return to school.
SUICIDE THREAT
