MISSING STUDENT
1. If a student is missing (or has runaway) from your room take a minute or two to try and locate the person. If abduction is known or suspected call 911 immediately. If you observe the student running away try to get a responsible adult to follow them.
2. If student is not quickly found, have the office make an announcement asking the missing student to return to class immediately. If the student does not return, notify principal. NOTE: THIS IS A SITUATION THAT WARRANTS INTERRUPTING CLASSES WITH AN ANNOUNCEMENT AND INTERRUPTING THE PRINCIPAL IF HE/SHE IS ENGAGED IN ANOTHER ACTIVITY.
3. Several staff conduct a thorough search of the interior and immediate exterior of the building. This should take no longer than a few minutes.
4. If student is still not found, call 911. Call student's parents or guardians.
5. Be prepared to provide police with the following information: name of student; age; sex; race/ethnicity; height; weight; hair color, style, length; eye color; date and time of last contact; location last seen; clothing person was last seen wearing; address; phone numbers; a photo if available. Also let law enforcement know of any special conditions e.g., if the student is disabled or distraught.
6. Principal should notify superintendent.
