EARTHQUAKE

1.  If indoors or outdoors, take action at the first indication of ground shaking.

2.  INDOORS; Stay inside.  Move away from widows, shelves, and heavy objects that might fall. Take cover under a table or desk, drop and cover, if the table or desk moves, hold the legs and move with it.

3.  OUTDOORS; Move to an open space, away from buildings and overhead power lines.  Lie down or crouch.  Keep looking around for potential dangers that may demand your movement.

4.  Principal's office should make a quick assessment.  Make decision whether to evacuate and whether to call 911 for rescue officials. 

5.  Don't move the seriously injured unless they are still in danger.  Administer first aid if necessary. 

6.  Do NOT use the telephone, light switches, matches, candles, or other open flame unless absolutely certain there is no natural gas leaking.

7.  Custodian will shut off gas, water, electrical main switches, if possible, and notify the principal of any damage to these supply lines.  Report damage to the appropriate utility company.

8.  The principal (or designee) will determine the advisability of canceling school and will make appropriate contact with the superintendent (or designee).

9.  The building, if damaged, will be re-occupied only after it has been declared safe by qualified  personnel who have inspected structural soundness; electrical wiring; oil, gas, and other fuel systems; water distribution; boiler and heating systems.
