DEATH / HOMICIDE

IF INCIDENT OCCURS AT SCHOOL

1.  Notify principal's office.  Principal will call 911 for police, ambulance and security.  Notify superintendent.

2.  If perpetrator is in the area, speak calmly with him until police arrive.  Try to regain general calm.

3.  If there is no perpetrator, remove students from the area and calm them.  Don't touch any items in the area.

4.  Isolate witnesses (do not allow them to talk to anyone).  Await local law enforcement officials and administrative personnel.

5.  Principal notifies parent(s) or guardian(s) of affected student(s) or the emergency contact of  affected staff member(s).

6.  Direct witness(es) to school counselor(s).  Contact parents if student is sent to a counselor.

7.  Announce counseling services and document students receiving counseling.

8.  File incident reports.

IF INCIDENT OCCURS OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL

1.  Notify staff members before normal operating hours.

2.  Determine method of notifying students and parents.  Announce availability of counseling services for those who need assistance.

3.  Refer media to district office.
